This is the official web site for the National office. There is a lot of information
on the National organization, its officers and nationwide chapter organization
structure, the organization's goals and objectives, and much more.
American
Heart Association: www.americanheart.org
The official Web site of the American Heart Association,
information is available on heart and stroke, risk assessment,
nutrition, research, publications, and family health.
National
Coalition for Women with Heart Disease: www.womenheart.org
The Coalition is the only national organization founded by
women with heart disease. The site contains good reference
information and membership is free.
American
College of Cardiology: www.acc.org
Membership is restricted to cardiologists but the Web site
allows searches for clinical statements (new research) on all
aspects of heart disease.
American
Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation: ww.aacvpr.org
This Web site provides good sources of reference materials
on cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation as well as links to most major organizations
involved in cardiac and ulmonary disease.

Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute: www.nhlbi.nih.gov
The Institute is part of the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Government.
The Web site is very comprehensive, covering such areas as heart information,
scientific resources, studies, etc. It also provides links to numerous government
departments, associations, and databases like MedlinePlus (www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus) where you can search for drug information, specific health topics, and current
news on heart research developments.

The Association is a division of the American Heart Association. It specializes
in the area of stroke, providing information on stroke assessment, management,
research, etc.

Diabetes Association: www.diabetes.org
This Web site contains a wealth of information on nutrition, exercise, risk,
etc. It also lists books and journals available either for sale or as subscriptions.
USDA
Food and Nutrition Information Center: www.nal.usda.gov/fnic
The
Center is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Agriculture
Research Service. Founded in 1971, this site provides information on
food and human nutrition including dietary guidelines and supplements
and food composition. There is a specific section on heart health and
sources for diet information.
American
Lung Association: www.lungusa.org
The association was founded in 1904 and provides information on all types of
lung disease with special emphasis on asthma, tobacco and environmental health.
Healthfinder: www.healthfinder.gov
Operated by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services, the site contains a health library, a special
section on health topics organized by age, by race and ethnicity, for men,
for women, etc., a section on information about doctors, hospitals, health
insurance, prescriptions, Medicare and Medicaid, and a directory of healthfinder
organizations including government agencies, clearinghouses, nonprofits
and universities.
INOVA
Heart Services: www.inova.org/heart
Managed by INOVA Fairfax Hospital, this site provides up-to-date information
on the heart services available through the hospital as well as information
on the building progress of the INOVA Heart Institute scheduled to be opened
in 2004.
Mayo
Clinic: www.mayoclinic.com
This is an excellent resource for all types of diseases, especially heart disease,
diabetes, blood pressure and stroke, as well as current event information on
health topics of general public interest. The site has excellent information
sections on senior health and Women's health.
Food
and Drug Administration: www.fda.com
FDA, which is part of the Department of Health and Human Services, maintains
this web site. The site offers information on the areas FDA regulates, such
as food, prescription drugs, medical devices, etc., as well as FDA news (press
releases, meetings, speeches). It also allows site visitors to search specific
topics of interest.
HeartInfo.org: www.heartinfo.org
HeartInfo.org is operated by TriGenesis Communications, Inc., a for-profit
medical education company. The web site, Heartinfo.org is an independent,
educational web site that provides instructional information and services
for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. It also has
excellent links to other sites where questions on medications, new devices,
new procedures and much more can be accessed.

Rhythm Society: www.hrsonline.org
The Society provides accurate, clear and understandable information about cardiac
arrhythmia disorders. Designed to educate the patients and the public, the
site aims to further understanding of heart rhythm problems, causes of various
types of arrhythmia, and treatment options.
WebMd: www.webmd.com
This health information repository on the Internet permits site visitors to
research specific diseases, including heart disease, locate physicians,
and search clinical trials. It also has an extensive medical library. It
is an excellent site if you are looking for any type of health and wellness
information and there are no fees to access the information.
Organ & Tissue
Donation: Three organizations are listed. All provide excellent
information on the value of organ and tissue donation and for Virginia
residents, you can sign up on-line to become an organ and tissue
donor. All of us at Mended Hearts can appreciate, more then most,
receiving a second, third, and in some instances a fourth chance
at life. Consider becoming an organ and tissue donor.
